If U2 ruled the world, Bono would be the obvious choice to fill the role of POTUS. But Tuesday night at the band's concert at FedEx Field, Bono set the record straight. “President The Edge” is how Bono introduced the band’s second in command, referring to the guitarist as “the leader of my free world.”
And thus opened a show that delivered on everything a U2 concert should be – impressive, packed and full of political undertones.
After much anticipation and some crowd build-up helped along by Bowie’s "Space Oddity," U2 took to the stage to a jam-packed arena. Bono paid homage to the hometown crowd, saying that it was a great night for the band, as well as a great night for him personally. “On the left and on the right, you have opened the doors for me," he told the crowd.
And in the spirit of bi-partisanship, he thanked those whom he said came out to support him last night, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Josh Bolton and “Bush’s Team,” Pat Leahy – who Bono called “the John Wayne of D.C.” – and former Sen. Tom Daschle.
The President of Rwanda and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor were also in attendance.
And what is any concert at FedEx without some papal representation? “Cardinal McCarrick is in the house. We have a cardinal at a rock show. Come on!!”
Bono dedicated “New Year's Day” to Ted Kennedy and “Beautiful Day” to Eunice and Timmy Shriver.
